Eco-Schools USVI
Eco-Schools News!
The Virgin Islands Conservation Society and the Virgin Islands Department of Education recently signed a 5-year Memorandum of Understanding in April 2025, demonstrating long-term commitment to the Eco-Schools USVI program, focusing on environmental and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) education in the Territory. This is the second Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the VI Conservation Society (VICS) and the VI Department of Education (VIDE). shows significant support for continued partnership and efforts to support students and schools to learn about STEAM careers and make positive, student-led changes in schools and the environment.
Eco-Schools USVI focuses on increased environmental literacy and awareness for
VI school children, teachers, and the greater community.
Four Principles Aspects of Eco-Schools:
The program is one of continual reduction of the school’s environmental impact. The highest award, Green Flag, requires renewal every two years.
The Eco-Schools program is run by FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) and operates in over 60 countries sharing the same methodology and concepts.
Any school using the Eco-Schools guidelines can adapt the program to their needs. It is flexible, therefore, different schools will find different routes to achieving Eco-Schools status.
Eco-Schools aims to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school. It endeavors to extend learning beyond the classroom and develop responsible attitudes and commitment, both at home and in the wider community.
International & National Impact
Eco-Schools began in 1994 and is now the world’s largest and only pupil-led environmental education program. The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) is the international umbrella organization, which coordinates the international management of the Eco-Schools program. It delegates authority to nominated national organizations, such as Virgin Islands Conservation Society, who run their own individualized Eco-Schools Programs within their designated area and who report back to FEE. More details can be found on the International Eco-Schools website.
